About Us

History

Intelligent Pharma was founded in 2007 by Dr. Ignasi Belda at the Barcelona Science Park along with support from Mr. Jaime Belda, Ms. Laia Navarro and Prof. Ernest Giralt. The idea of Intelligent Pharma came from the realization that pharmaceutical and biotech companies are more prone to outsource their computational chemistry services than develop them in-house, and there were very few resources on the market in this field. The few available experts on computational chemistry were not equipped with the proper skills to truly develop customized scientific software, which is a must for computational chemistry projects. When Intelligent Pharma was founded, it provided the research community with highly specialized and customized services in computational chemistry ad hoc for a wide variety of research projects.

When Intelligent Pharma was still just an idea, Bancaixa (now integrated into Bankia, the third largest bank in Spain and one of the biggest in all of Europe) gave these entrepreneurs an award for the business plan they presented to the Premi Joves Emprenedors contest in 2006. Soon after, the CIDEM (former Center for Innovation and Business Development for the Catalonia Regional Government, now known as ACC1Ó) recognized them as well. In the summer of 2007, we hired our first employee, Dr. Óscar Villacañas, an experienced researcher in computational chemistry who was named the CSO of Intelligent Pharma.

In 2008, Intelligent Pharma began putting its first technologies on the market and started working on projects with several clients. The staff of the company grew progressively. This rapid growth and our dedication to research, innovation, and social responsibility earned us several awards in 2008: the BioEmprenedor Award 2008 (Genoma, España) for being the best biotech start-up of the year, the Fem Empresa Award 2008 (Caixa, Tarragona), and an award for being the company with the highest level of corporate social responsibility in the region of Barcelona in 2008 (Diputació de Barcelona).

In 2009, we took firm steps towards launching Intelligent Pharma into the international market. We increased our participation in several international conferences and trade expositions in Italy, Austria, the USA, etc.; we established a successful collaboration with our British partner IDBS; and, we were cited by MIT Magazine as one of the leading companies in computational chemistry. Our efforts were awarded, once more, for the development of our technology tool HELIOS as the best digital innovation by an SME in 2009 in Spain by the Fundació BDigital.

In 2010, we increased our efforts to provide our services on an international level while continuing to serve Spanish pharmaceutical companies, who were the majority of our client base, along with a lot of biotech companies and other research institutions. We opened our first international office in Heidelberg (Germany), and our efforts were again awarded by La Caixa (the 4th largest bank in Spain) for being the Catalan company with the best potential for innovation and growth (Catalonian Emprendedor XXI Award, 2010) and by the University of Barcelona for being the best innovative company to emerge from the university (Senen Vilaró Award).

In 2011, we opened our second international office at the BioPark in the north of London (UK), we sponsored two international conferences in the USA, the CHI's Structure-Based Drug Design Conference in Boston and the 5th Drug Design and Medicinal Chemistry Conference in San Diego, and we began to work with clients and collaborators in five different countries. We regularly launched new technologies on the market thanks to the efforts of our truly dedicated R&D department, which is committed to finding new innovations to serve our clients. Our business development team has grown to five people, and Intelligent Pharma has restructured the business into three lines: Molecular Modeling Services, 3rd Party Data Management Solutions, and Scientific Software Development Services. Finally, Intelligent Pharma started a new collaboration with another scientific software company from Germany, a-Tune.

In 2012, we continued our international expansion, including the expansion of our operations in Asia. We sponsored scientific international conferences such as the 19th Annual Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference in San Francisco, the 11th annual Advances and Progress in Drug Design event in London, and the 6th Drug Design & Medicinal Chemistry in San Diego. We also attended BioPartnering North America 2012 in Vancouver, B.C., BIO 2012 in Boston, BioSpain 2012 in Bilbao, and the ChemOutsourcing event in Long Branch. In our constant effort to contribute to our R&D, we started a very innovative process of R&D crowdsourcing to accelerate the development of new technologies and services. We carried out our first projects for our clients providing this service in collaboration with other CRO’s. Finally, in the year 2012, the whole company adopted lean management methods such as Kanban and Scrum to assure our clients received maximum quality in their deliveries.

In 2013, we continued our international expansion and started collaborating with the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona to launch HYPERION, our technology to detect allosteric sites on proteins. We sponsored scientific international conferences such as the 12th Advances and Progress in Drug Design in Boston, the 14th Annual Drug Discovery Leaders’ Summit in Geneva, and the Proteinase 2013 in Basel. We also attended the Advances and Progress in Drug Design in London, BioKorea in Seoul, Innovation Days in Paris, BioJapan in Yokohama, and BioEurope in Vienna.

2014 was the year of the launch of PYTHIA, our technology to discover pharmacology profiles, where our efforts were awarded once more with the Prince of Girona Foundation Scientific Research Award [business category]. We sponsored international scientific conferences such as the 8th Drug Design & Medicinal Chemistry in Berlin, the ADME, DCC, FCE 2014 in Barcelona, and the Chemical Biology for Target Validation in Boston. We also attended the Innovation Days in Paris, BIO in San Diego, BioEuropeSpring in Torino, BioKorea in Seoul, and Biojapan in Yokohama.

In 2015, we sponsored scientific international conferences such as the Drug Discovery Summit in Berlin, the World Preclinical Congress in Boston and the Proteinase in Basel. We also attended the Biotech Showcase in San Francisco, the BioEurope Spring in Paris, the BIO in Philadelphia, the Anglonordic Life Sciences in London, the NLS Days in Stockholm, the Frontiers in Medicinal Chemistry in Antwerp, the BioFit in Strasbourg, the BioEurope in Munich, the CPHi in Madrid and the Incosmetics in Barcelona).
